The powerful sound of the Kokyo Taiko Drummers from Chicago will thrill listeners of this opening concert of the new season. New Music Director Jamin Hoffman and the orchestra will take up the Asian theme with a performance of "Journeyings and Memories" by American composer and scholar of Asian culture, Elliot Weisgarber. Sullivan's Overture to "The Mikado", an orchestral version of Puccini's "Un bel di" from Madame Butterfly, plus a new composition written for this concert by CCO Composer-in-Residence Dan Lawitts completes the music trek. And don't miss a special post concert reception featuring fresh pastries from the Far East and beyond.

As we continue on a musical journey around the world, we'll spend Christmas with music of Borodin, On the Steppes of Central Asia, with Prokofiev's Lieutenant Kije Suite, and with Tchaikovsky's "Trepak" from The Nutcracker. And, the enchanting melodies of a collection of traditional Polish Christmas carols will delight when performed by the choirs of Wauwatosa East High School led by Wendy Traeger with the orchestra.
 
 
European Traditions

Our musical caravan will take us to Europe as Jamin Hoffman leads the orchestra in a performance of Saint-Saens' Marche Militaire Francaise, Mozart's German Dances and the exotic Capriccio Espagnol by Rimsky-Korsakov. The program will also feature the winner of the annual CCO Concerto Competition in a performance of his or her chosen concerto. Don't forget to stay for another special post concert reception with authentic fresh pastries from around the world.
 
 
The New World

Our season's musical tour ends in America with a recently completed work by Milwaukee native Judith Baity, entitled "The Mary McLeod Bethune Suite", based on the powerfully moving Last Will and Testament of Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, noted educator, public figure, founder of Bethune-Cookman College and daughter of former slaves. The Heritage Chorale and conductor Ella Washington, fresh from a performance at Carnegie Hall, will be featured in the Suite with the CCO. Also on the program will be Dvorak's best known and most loved symphony, the Symphony No. 9, "From the New World", written in 1893, while the composer was living in America, plus Bernstein's Overture to "Candide".
